Town & Villages

Naxos Town or Chora is considered to be one of the most beautiful island capitals of the Aegean. The designation of Chora is in line with Venetian architecture and there are still remains of the Castle of Marco Sanudo who conquered the Cyclades in 1207. Chora has retained its medieval atmosphere and has a lot of interesting museums, mansions and churches worth visiting.
If you want a taste of traditional Cycladic life, then the old villages in Naxos are an ideal option:

The most famous are:
Apiranthos or ‘The Marble Village’ is 32 km away from Chora. It is a very picturesque village on a hilltop full of houses made of marble and an impressive Church of Panagia Apeirathitissa. There are also some small cafes and taverns in the village that overlook the town. A number of interesting museums can also be found there.
Halki Village is 16 km away from Chora and was once the capital of Naxos due to its wealth and trade power. Many Neoclassical buildings and churches can be found on the area and of special interest is the 9th century church of Panagia which is home to many Byzantine frescoes. Halki is also home to Kitron production, where you get to see the whole procedure of production with free entrance.

You can find some picturesque & traditional villages just a few kilometres away.
Sangri Village is located at a distance of 12 km from Chora. Sangri is located on a hill and unlike other Cycladic villages, Sangri follows medieval architecture principles in grey and brown colors. One can also visit the various Byzantine monasteries and the ancient Temple of Demetra on the village, the latter being one of the most interesting sights in Naxos.
Glinado is one small picturesque village built on the mountainside at a distance of 6km from Chora. It has 500 inhabitants and fertile ground making it suitable for cattle breeding and agriculture. In the region of Iria, one can see the sanctuary of Dionysus, the god of wine, who lived in Naxos according to Greek mythology. There are also a lot of nice churches. Glinado is close to other beautiful villages, Galanado and Potamia.
